Veeam Partners with Microsoft and VMware to Enable Next-Generation Cloud Services

Baar, Switzerland: October 15, 2014: Veeam® Software, the innovative provider of solutions that deliver Availability for the Modern Data Center™, today announced that it is collaborating with Microsoft and VMware to help partners extend their availability offerings to the cloud. Specifically, Veeam is working closely with both Microsoft and VMware to ensure that Veeam Cloud Providers (VCPs) will be able to seamlessly deploy Veeam Cloud Connect in Microsoft Azure and VMware vCloud Air.

As the largest subsegment of the storage management software market, the backup/recovery software market grew 6.8% in 2013 to $4.7 billion, which was slower when compared with 2012's growth of 8.1%. The growth was, in part, a result of the demand for integrated solutions for cloud-enabled backup/recovery and the increased need for information management. As businesses look to extend their operations into the cloud—public or hybrid—data protection is an ideal candidate. Through its close partnerships with Microsoft and VMware, Veeam continues to lead the market in delivering a robust solution to meet customer needs.

“Across the globe, customers and resellers alike are looking to the cloud to grow their businesses,” commented Ratmir Timashev, president and CEO of Veeam. “Placing critical assets outside your ‘walls’ is a leap of faith, but with Microsoft Azure and VMware vCloud Air, resellers and service providers have two offerings that help them take the cost, complexity and concern out of data center design and deployment. Veeam has long-standing partnerships with both Microsoft and VMware, and our teams are tightly integrated to ensure that together, we are able to provision the Always-On Business™.”

Veeam recommends that IT organizations follow the 3-2-1 rule: Three copies of data on two different kinds of media, one of which is off site. Veeam enables IT to satisfy the offsite requirement without having to invest in offsite infrastructure or management, since cloud resources are available on demand.

As part of its commitment to deliver robust cloud-based availability, Veeam recently announced Veeam Cloud Provider (VCP) partners that will provide support for cloud backup with Veeam Cloud Connect on the first day of Veeam Availability Suite™ v8 general availability, eliminating the need for customers to deploy costly off-premises infrastructure.

Integration of Veeam Cloud Connect with Azure and vCloud Air will be of particular interest to existing and new members of the Veeam ProPartner network who want to become service providers and offer availability in the cloud, without investing in their own cloud infrastructure.

Veeam Cloud Connect, part of the new Veeam Availability Suite v8, gives Veeam customers a fully integrated, secure and efficient means to move backups to an offsite backup repository managed by the service provider of their choice; thus avoiding the upfront capital investment of their own offsite infrastructure. Service providers get a simple, powerful platform to deliver fast and secure backup to the cloud for over 111,500 Veeam customers. In fact, Veeam Cloud Connect is so simple to set up that any Veeam ProPartner can become a service provider and offer offsite backup services to customers in less than 10 minutes using the service provider’s own cloud infrastructure or VMware vCloud Air or Microsoft Azure.

Veeam Announces VCP Launch Partners for Veeam Availability Suite™ v8

VeeamON – Las Vegas, NV: October 6, 2014: Veeam® Software, the innovative provider of solutions that deliver Availability for the Modern Data Center™, today announced Veeam Cloud Provider (VCP) partners that will support Veeam Cloud Connect on the same day new Veeam Availability Suite™ v8 becomes generally available, planned for later this quarter.

Global data center systems spending will reach $140 billion this year, we believe driven by the customer demand for virtualization and cloud. As organizations modernize their infrastructures to deliver the Always-On Business™, IT managers are increasingly looking to service providers for help, particularly in getting a copy of their data off site. Cloud backup is already a large market, and it’s growing. According to a recent report from Storage Magazine, 31 percent of organizations are planning to use cloud services for disaster recovery and business continuity, as part of an overall availability plan.

Veeam Cloud Connect, part of the new Veeam Availability Suite v8, gives Veeam customers a fully integrated, secure and efficient means to move backups to an offsite backup repository managed by the service provider of their choice, avoiding the upfront capital investment of their own offsite infrastructure. Service providers get a simple, powerful platform to deliver fast and secure backup to the cloud for over 111,500 Veeam customers. In fact, Veeam Cloud Connect is so simple to set up, any Veeam ProPartner can become a service provider and offer offsite backup repository services to their customers in under 10 minutes.

Veeam’s approach to the cloud is to enable VCP partners to provision services that address customers’ needs while also enabling partners to extend their own business offerings. It is not to build our [Veeam’s] own cloud as so many legacy backup vendors have attempted to do,” said Ratmir Timashev, CEO of Veeam. “Our partners are closer to our customers and have built deep relationships as trusted advisors. Veeam’s role is to empower partners to deliver the highest quality off-site backup services, and with the new Veeam Availability Suite v8 and Veeam Cloud Connect, they have access to a market-leading portfolio which helps them do just that.”

“It’s impossible to talk about IT modernization without talking about the cloud, especially when it comes to data protection and disaster recovery,” said Jason Buffington, senior analyst at ESG. “Increasingly, the cloud is becoming an integral part of enterprise and SMB data protection and disaster recovery strategies. It’s imperative that at least one copy of a backup live off site and the cloud fulfills that requirement.”

Veeam recommends that IT organizations follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of data on two different kinds of media, one of which is off site. Veeam Cloud Connect enables IT to satisfy the offsite requirement without having to invest in offsite infrastructure or management, since cloud resources are available on demand.

Both current VCP partners and new Veeam service providers have the opportunity to leverage Veeam Cloud Connect to grow their customer base and recurring revenue streams. Basic setup is simple and takes less than 10 minutes, providing all the infrastructure management capabilities a service provider needs to offer an offsite backup repository service to customers. Moreover, an innovative combination of storage and compute makes it possible to efficiently store even large backups in the cloud. Veeam also gives VCP partners the ability to offer fully managed D2D2C (disk-to-disk-to-cloud) backup solutions, which back up to local disk first before sending the backup offsite to the cloud. Many of these VCP partners also offer disaster recovery planning, testing and recovery services.

Veeam Software selects NEXTDC as a Technology Alliance Partner

The alliance is part of a strategic initiative between Veeam and NEXTDC to drive and promote the services of Veeam’s Cloud Provider Program (VCP) partner base to end customers’ resellers, MSPs and service providers. The VCP program supports a more than 5,000-strong global network of service providers who use Veeam Software to provide such services as offsite backups, standby replica VMs, and warm DR (disaster recovery) sites, as well as service offerings including Backup-as-a-Service and Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service.

The initiative will look to benefit both end customers and the channel in the following way:
For end customers, understanding what services are available in the same data centre ecosystem allows businesses to be agile, flexible to new technology requirements and deploy quickly by leveraging hosted services via low cost, low latency cross connects or utilise existing carrier networks between NEXTDC facilities.
For MSPs and traditional resellers, the ecosystem will not just look to promote the services of partners to end customers, but also promote new go to market offerings through add on or white labelling services that partners can leverage to meet customer needs.

Veeam and NEXTDC are similar in that we are both young, innovative and disruptive to the traditional landscape,” said Don Williams, Vice President for Asia Pacific of Veeam. “We are both 100 per cent committed to the channel and promoting NEXTDC’s ecosystem for partners and customers to connect and realise the benefits of a cloud marketplace. With Veeam Availability Suite™ v8 (available in early Q4 2014) and Cloud Connect functionality being released later this year, this announcement is timely to promote the services of our shared partner community.”

The alliance will begin with a range of activities aimed at promoting the services of shared Veeam and NEXTDC partners, along with business and technical forums educating the marketplace on the benefits of such services as Backup and Disaster Recovery.

VMware, NVIDIA and Google Unveil Future of Graphics-Rich Applications Delivered on Enterprise Cloud Desktops

Today at VMworld® 2014, VMware, NVIDIA and Google announced a collaborative effort to deliver high-performance virtual desktops and workstation-class graphics to Google Chromebooks. Showcased as a technology preview, the solution demonstrates the next generation of VMware Blast Performance and NVIDIA GRID™ vGPU™ technology to satisfy customers' most demanding visual computing needs. The joint effort is expected to expand the hardware options for high-performance virtual desktops, enabling customers to select their system of choice without compromise. "We are breaking down traditional barriers to adopting virtual desktops and offering new economics for the delivery of graphics-intensive applications through the power of the cloud," said Sanjay Poonen, executive vice president and general manager, End-User Computing, VMware. "Organizations of all industries and requirements will soon be able to embrace the mobile-cloud using a solution that offers a new way to work from three proven industry leaders." The joint solution optimizes the performance of virtual graphics applications at scale. NVIDIA GRID vGPU is the industry's most advanced technology for sharing GPU acceleration between multiple virtual desktops. Combined with VMware Horizon in the data center, the solution will optimize graphics and CPU utilization to allow more desktops and applications to be deployed on a single server. VMware BLAST Performance technology in the data center and in firmware residing on Chromebooks will deliver a great end-user experience, graphics-rich applications with high fidelity, and extended battery life by up to 50 percent using exclusive NVIDIA® Tegra® decode technologiesi. This makes graphically demanding applications, such as Adobe Illustrator CC, Autodesk AutoCAD® and productivity applications like Microsoft Office completely fluid. NVIDIA Tegra K1-powered Chromebooks will be among the first Chromebooks to take advantage of this future technology. "This collaboration will offer customers all the performance, stability and compatibility of NVIDIA hardware-accelerated graphics, with the added flexibility, mobility and security of a virtual environment," said Jeff Brown, vice president and general manager, Professional Solutions Business, NVIDIA. "Chromebooks were designed to bring a new approach to many of the problems with traditional computers," said Caesar Sengupta, vice president of product management, Google. "We're excited about what this collaboration means for our customers and what it can enable them to do. Imagine manufacturers designing complex 3D models and sharing them with engineers around the globe, or physicians taking medical imaging out into the community, rather than being tethered to high end workstations."

Arista Networks and VMware Enter Strategic Relationship to Advance Adoption of Network Virtualization

Arista Networks, Inc. (NYSE: ANET), a leader in software driven cloud networking, and VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW) today announced a strategic relationship to enable customers to accelerate adoption of network virtualization in the software-defined data center (SDDC). This new collaboration agreement builds on the companies' four year relationship in developing innovative, integrated SDDC solutions, and focuses on development and joint marketing of the generally available Arista and VMware integrated networking solution for VMware NSX™.

Arista and VMware are continuing to partner in areas that will optimize the software-defined data center for the hybrid cloud. Building on previous work around VMware vSphere®, VMware vCloud Director™, and VXLAN support, the companies are working together to drive greater interoperability across the broader VMware SDDC portfolio.

Arista's network programmable underlay, utilizing Arista Extensible Operating System, EOS®, network APIs and hardware enabled VXLAN Tunnel Endpoints (VTEPS) and the VMware NSX network virtualization platform, support a software-defined data center for both enterprise and service provider customers. The Arista and VMware integrated networking solution combines award-winning network infrastructure with a complete network virtualization platform enabled to simplify management and provisioning, speed service delivery, reduce costs and create opportunities for competitive differentiation. The tools provided by Arista and VMware put control and visibility back in the hands of the network and systems administrators.

This is the third phase of an ongoing collaboration between the two companies:
- Phase 1 2010+: ESX and vSphere/VMware vCloud Integration
- Phase 2 2012+: VXLAN specification and interoperability across physical/virtual networks
- Phase 3 2014+: VMware NSX integration and Arista Networks support for VMware vCenter™ Operations Management Suite and VMware vCenter™ Log Insight™
"With multiple years of joint engineering and customer deployments, this announcement highlights our growing relationship with VMware. Arista is committed to working with VMware products and architectures to optimally combine the VMware network virtualization platform and Arista programmable physical networks for the best network-wide virtualization deployments."
- Jayshree Ullal, President and CEO, Arista Networks

"VMware and Arista are challenging the status quo in networking today, driving innovative, agile and cost-effective solutions that are changing the operations and economics of data centers. Through our shared vision for the software-defined data center, we are empowering customers to integrate Arista EOS-based network infrastructure with VMware NSX™ to enable the same operational model to be used for both virtual and physical workloads, resulting in increased efficiency and agility for the data center operator."
- Raghu Raghuram, Executive Vice President of Cloud Infrastructure and Management, VMware

"The excitement around SDN and network virtualization is that -- for the first time -- networking is becoming more software orientated, so we're able to dynamically orchestrate service modification and activation in real-time. Network connectivity can now keep up when virtual machines and associated compute and storage change or are moved within distributed data centers. This means that servers, storage and now the network are in synch so that we can meet the specific needs of our customers in a timescale they demand. As a result of deploying a new network architecture based on Arista and VMware networking technologies, the time for Colt to add, change or modify services now takes minutes rather than days, and enables Colt to onboard customers faster and expand its service portfolio quicker."

- Mirko Voltolini, VP Technology and Architecture at Colt

Software Driven Networking for today's Data Center Requirements

Arista Networks and VMware recognize that today's data centers require automation, self-service provisioning, and linear scaling of both performance and data center economics. Arista's award-winning data center switching products combined with VMware NSX will be able to deliver next-generation network virtualization, custom programmability and simplified architectures, with a single point of management. VMware and Arista Networks help unlock the full potential of the software-defined data center, allowing IT organizations to:
- Automate delivery of next-generation network services
- Enable end-to-end network virtualization and deliver application workload mobility by preserving IP addressing within and between data centers
- Simplified troubleshooting by offering complete physical and virtual network visibility
- Accelerate deployment of business critical applications through transparent network provisioning
- Seamless Integration without performance impact of non virtualized applications or servers

New Veeam Management Pack™ v7 for System Center with Support for Microsoft Hyper-V Now Available

Veeam Software innovative provider of solutions that deliver Availability for the Modern Data Center™, today announced that the new Veeam Management Pack (MP) version 7 for System Center is now generally available. Veeam MP v7 adds Microsoft Hyper-V support, providing full app-to-metal visibility within Microsoft System Center for both the Hyper-V and VMware vSphere layers to proactively monitor and alert IT of issues before they affect operations. Veeam has also introduced the full-featured Enterprise Plus and the Enterprise edition to meet the different IT management needs and budgets of System Center users.

Veeam MP v7 extends System Center Operations Manager’s features to deliver complete visibility of virtual and physical infrastructures and their dependencies. IT managers receive the monitoring, analysis and planning tools needed to quickly resolve issues, make informed decisions and meet the 24/7 availability needs of today’s business.

New features in Veeam MP v7 include:

Real-time Hyper-V performance metrics: Gives Hyper-V administrators detailed real-time insight into what is happening in their environment. Veeam Task Manager for Hyper-V displays real-time memory CPU consumption for the host and each associated VM.

Capacity planning for hybrid cloud: Takes the time and guesswork out of planning hybrid cloud environments. Veeam MP v7 analyzes on-premises virtual workloads and recommends the appropriate Microsoft Azure or VMware vCloud Hybrid Service resources so that IT can efficiently plan and budget for a hybrid cloud strategy.

vSphere host security profile reporting: Provides IT with visibility into vSphere security settings for firewalls and services including changes, when changes occurred, who changed the setting and other critical details needed to track security configuration.

Enhanced Veeam MP deployment automation: Reduces the time and effort needed to deploy Veeam MP to support the largest VMware environments by automatically deploying collection components.

“By fully integrating Microsoft Hyper-V with Veeam MP v7 we now provide the rapidly growing Hyper-V user base with the same powerful management and monitoring tools that vSphere administrators have long enjoyed,” said Ratmir Timashev, President and CEO of Veeam. “This includes complete visibility of their critical virtual systems, risk mitigation, and proactive monitoring of Hyper-V from Microsoft’s System Center Operations Manager console.”

"We are pleased to see Veeam support System Center with the Veeam Management Pack™ v7,” said Chris Van Wesep, Director, Product Marketing, Cloud & Enterprise at Microsoft. “With this latest release, Veeam Management Pack builds on Microsoft System Center’s unified approach to management for virtual and physical infrastructure across on-premises and service provider environments.”

“Business continuity in today’s complex mix of virtual and physical resources requires solutions that understand the entire environment,” said Iain Mobberley, Technical Director at OCSL, a UK-based system integrator and gold Veeam Partner. “Our customers depend on the Veeam Management Pack integrated with Microsoft System Center for critical visibility, monitoring and analysis views to reduce IT risks and deliver on SLA commitments.”

Product Editions

Two licensing options are now offered with Veeam MP v7: the Enterprise Plus edition and Enterprise edition.

The Enterprise Plus edition provides full features for strategic visibility of the app-to-metal stack and analysis tools needed for critical decision making, planning, optimization and right-sizing dynamic virtual environments. Current Veeam MP v6.5 customers with active maintenance can upgrade to Enterprise Plus edition free of charge.

The Enterprise edition is designed to handle tactical management tasks and includes monitoring and alert management, report templates, and sophisticated dashboards, along with a subset of the management features offered in previous versions of Veeam MP.

Introductory Offer for Veeam MP v7 Enterprise Edition for Hyper-V

Now through Dec. 31, 2014, Veeam provides up to 100 full-production licenses of Veeam MP Enterprise edition for Hyper-V, plus one year of maintenance per customer free of charge. These free licenses are eligible for upgrade to the full-featured Enterprise Plus.

Veeam Positioned in the “Visionaries” Quadrant of the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances

Evaluation Based on Completeness of Vision and Ability to Execute

Veeam® Software, innovative provider of solutions that deliver Availability for the Modern Data Center™, today announced that the company has been positioned by Gartner, Inc. in the “Visionaries” quadrant of the June 16, 2014, Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances.

“We consider our positioning in the “Visionaries” quadrant by Gartner confirmation of our ability to provide data center availability solutions that enable customers to access data 24/7 from anywhere,” said Ratmir Timashev, president and CEO of Veeam. “With the upcoming launch of the Veeam Availability Suite™ v8 later this year, IT organizations will be able deploy a new enabling technology that transforms the Always-On Business™ from a capability reserved for only a few operations at the world’s largest organizations into a reality for everyone.”

According to Gartner, the Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances “describes the evolution of backup, which incorporates new products, solutions and techniques for protecting, backing up and recovering physical server and virtual server files, applications, system images and remote offices and endpoint devices. These backup products provide features such as traditional backup to tape, backup to conventional disk or virtual tape library (VTL), data reduction, snapshot, heterogeneous replication, and continuous data protection (CDP). These solutions may be provided as software only, or as an integrated appliance that contains all or substantial components of the backup application, such as backup management server or a media server.”

“Organizations worldwide are seeking ways to easily, quickly and cost-effectively ensure that their data is appropriately protected,” writes Dave Russell, Vice President and Distinguished Analyst, and Pushan Rinnen, Research Director, in this year’s Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup Software and Integrated Appliances. “Organizations are also voicing the opinion that backup needs to improve a lot, not just a little. The rising frustration with backup implies that the data protection approaches of the past may no longer suffice in meeting current — much less future — recovery requirements.”

Veeam will showcase its availability solutions at VeeamON: The World’s Premier Data Center Availability Event, taking place October 6–9, 2014, at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, NV. Veeam will bring together industry-leading experts, Veeam customers and partners who will learn about enabling the Always-On Business. Registration is now open.

Security and compliance features, cost-savings and modernization were key factors in the county’s decision to deploy over 100,000 seats of Microsoft Office 365.

The County of Los Angeles moves to the cloud with Microsoft

Security and compliance features, cost-savings and modernization were key factors in the county’s decision to deploy over 100,000 seats of Microsoft Office 365.

On Wednesday, Microsoft Corp. announced that more than 100,000 employees of the County of Los Angeles will move to Microsoft Office 365 for Government, including roughly 20,000 law enforcement personnel.

“The county is constantly looking at opportunities to manage cost and improve service,” said Richard Sanchez, chief information officer for Los Angeles County. “Office 365 enables us to best manage our licenses, provide greater services to all 30-plus departments and control cost. Each department is unique in its needs and requirements, but departmental CIOs saw that with Office 365, they would be able to better serve the needs of their departmental employees and of the constituents.”

The county views Office 365 as a means to increase collaboration, provide a unified platform and help realize cost savings. These cost savings come in multiple forms. First, the county was able to consolidate 15 department enterprise agreements into one countywide agreement that ensures each department has access to the same Microsoft cloud services. This consistency improves performance in an environment that previously had multiple agency systems, hampering collaboration and increasing cost. Second, the agreement ensures that the county pays for only those services in use by existing employees. This represents a savings since staffing levels across various departments fluctuate from year to year or through seasonal workers. Finally, by moving to a cloud-based service, the county was able to avoid the type of large upfront capital expense traditionally required to modernize and consolidate systems.

The county’s transition to Microsoft cloud services also provides a platform for the future.

“The county sees a strong movement toward mobility by its staff and in its services offerings to the public through Web services and smart apps,” Sanchez said. “Departments will be able to start realizing the benefits of mobility. Using mobile devices, sheriff deputies can access information from their patrol cars, case workers can access files during a foster home visit, and a food inspector can file a report directly from a remote location. This move will help make county employees’ jobs easier by enabling them to exchange information and focus on delivery of services to citizens.”

The county’s desire to maintain its stringent standards for security and privacy requirements, including the Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) standard and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), was another major factor in its decision to choose Office 365.

“Office 365 provides the level of security and built-in compliance for HIPAA and CJIS that we require,” said Dr. Robert Pittman, chief information security officer for Los Angeles County.

“Los Angeles is the most populous county in the U.S. and realizes the importance of the due diligence required to make a move to the cloud,” said Michael Donlan, vice president, U.S. state and local government at Microsoft. “This move will afford it not only tangible cost savings but help provide enhanced productivity to government employees and county citizens — all through a cloud solution it is familiar with and can trust.”

Los Angeles County joins a long list of state and local government entities across the U.S. that are selecting Office 365. This includes a large number of California cities and counties, including San Francisco City and County, the cities of Long Beach, San Jose, Oakland and Anaheim, as well as Santa Clara County, Ventura County, and the San Bernardino County and Orange County sheriffs’ departments. Working with Los Angeles County, Microsoft Consulting Services will begin the migration to Office 365 in July, and Microsoft partner En Pointe Technologies will manage the agreement.

Microsoft’s work with Los Angeles County is part of the company’s program to empower people — whether governments, citizens or businesses — to transform their cities and their future. Through CityNext, people can take advantage of a broad portfolio of products and technologies, a global network of partners, and a long track record of successful education and social programs.

#MSFTCOSO POV: Global experts call for a unified approach to online safety

Once a month on The Fire Hose, Jacqueline Beauchere, Chief Online Safety Officer at Microsoft, shares her point of view on topics related to the global consumer online safety landscape. Follow the conversation on Twitter using #MSFTCOSO.

A global approach to awareness-raising and consumer education about the do’s and don’ts of online safety and security was the focus of a recent meeting sponsored by the U.S. National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and APWG (formerly the Anti-Phishing Working Group). The meeting, hosted by Microsoft at our Paris office, brought together more than 40 individuals representing government, technology companies, non-governmental organizations and child advocacy agencies from 13 countries. The group assembled to share knowledge and explore ways to collaborate to better protect people as they live out their lives online.

“We’re trying to reach everyone across the globe because we're all connected to the same Internet and, unless we're all safer and more secure as individuals, we won't have a safer and more secure Internet for us all," said Michael Kaiser, executive director of NCSA, based in Washington, D.C.

As Microsoft’s representative to the NCSA board of directors and the current board president, I’ve worked with Kaiser and others, encouraging them to engineer more formally an international extension of NCSA’s signature public-awareness campaign, STOP. THINK. CONNECT. (STC). Last month’s two-day meeting was the first official step in that process. Since its 2010 launch, STC has been recreated or adopted in 12 countries with at least two more acceptances pending, and is being leveraged by nearly 150 organizations, either for their own internal use to help educate employees or to share with customers.

This “working session” featured informative presentations from several of the participants about the compelling initiatives underway in their countries and regions—all aimed at helping individuals and families stay safer when they go online. A few questions emerged during the discussions that were interesting themes in and of themselves. For instance, what precise vocabulary is needed to describe a concerted international effort of this magnitude? Although technology companies and other organizations parse the terms security, online safety and privacy as separate and distinct but inter-related issues, research suggests that consumers see few differences. Rather, individuals focus on outcomes and end-results. For example, they want to protect their personal and financial information when banking online, or they want their children to be “safe.”

The group suggested promoting a “healthy digital lifestyle” or “digital well-being” as one possible approach. As sub-topics under those broader themes, participants identified four other possible joint focus areas: safety on mobile devices, protecting personal information, smarter social networking practices and protecting young people online. Going forward, the group will aim to coordinate around key dates that call for global action and involvement: Cyber Security Month in October, Safer Internet Day in February and perhaps Internet Safety Month in June. The group welcomes new members and organizations to help spread the message, and all were energized to convene again within a year.

Microsoft has supported STC since its conception more than five years ago, not only because we feel we share in the broad responsibility to help protect consumers online, but also because we feel that together—as industry, government, NGOs, child safety organizations and others—we can accomplish more than any singular entity on its own. We applaud NCSA and APWG for the Paris meeting, and look forward to continuing the compelling dialogue and further driving local and international calls to action.

For Veeam Resellers and Customers, It Provides an Easy, Efficient and Secure Way to Move Backups Offsite; Included in New Veeam Availability Suite v8

Veeam® Software, innovative provider of solutions that deliver Availability for the Modern Data Center™, today announced Veeam Cloud Connect, part of the new Veeam Availability Suite™ v8, which will be generally available in Q3, 2014. The new functionality gives service providers a direct pipeline to benefit from the Veeam ecosystem, which includes over 100,000 customers. Veeam customers get a fully integrated, secure and efficient means to move backups to an offsite backup repository managed by the service provider of their choice, but without the upfront capital investment of an offsite infrastructure.

“To ensure complete data center availability in the event of any disaster, Veeam recommends that IT follow the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of data on two different kinds of media, one of which is offsite,” said Ratmir Timashev, President and CEO of Veeam. “Veeam Cloud Connect enables IT to fulfill the offsite requirement without having to invest in offsite infrastructure or management, and presents new opportunities for service providers and Veeam resellers to build recurring revenue, offer additional services and establish relationships with new customers.”

New Opportunities for Service Providers
Both current Veeam Cloud Providers (VCPs) and new Veeam service providers can leverage Veeam Cloud Connect to grow their customer base and recurring revenue streams. Setup only requires a single server and takes less than 10 minutes, providing all the infrastructure management capabilities a service provider needs to offer an offsite repository service to Veeam customers.

Plus, pricing has been tailored to meet the specific needs of service providers. Instead of an up-front perpetual license, Veeam offers service providers monthly per VM licensing. Finally, Veeam customers can search for and contact nearby service providers through an integrated Web portal in Veeam Availability Suite v8, bringing new customers right to the service provider’s doorstep.

Features for service providers include:
Cloud gateway: Virtualizes all traffic between the customer and the service provider through a single port, creating a convenient way for customers to connect with cloud resources through firewalls.
SSL connection: Reliable, secure connection over SSL eliminates extra costs, complexity and management overhead—maintaining VPN infrastructure is no longer necessary.
Multi-tenancy: Manage multiple customers, cloud repositories and cloud gateways from one all-inclusive management and reporting console.
Resource management: Allocate storage for each customer, while leveraging built-in reports and alerts to track storage consumption, manage expiration dates, and send automatic renewal reminders.
Scale-out architecture: Easily scale Veeam Cloud Connect infrastructure by deploying multiple cloud gateways, thus enabling automatic load balancing and high availability.
End-to-end encryption: All data is protected in-flight with SSL, and customers can additionally encrypt data at-source (before it leaves their network perimeter) and still get all the benefits of Built-in WAN Acceleration.

“We have provided offsite backup and disaster recovery for Veeam customers since 2011,” said Matthew Chesterton, President of OffsiteDataSync, a Rochester, NY-based cloud solutions company and a Gold Veeam Cloud Provider. “By supporting multi-tenancy and eliminating the need for VPN connections, Veeam Cloud Connect makes it easier to offer these services at scale. Our hosting and Veeam expertise, along with the new Cloud Connect functionality and Veeam’s huge presence in the market, will allow us to quickly acquire new customers, resulting in additional growth of our company’s overall profitability.”

“Our customers are increasingly telling us that their applications and data centers need to be available 24-7,” said Helene Caraux, Cloud Product Manager at OVH, a Platinum Veeam Cloud Provider. “With Veeam Cloud Connect, we can play an important role in making that happen by providing them with a simple, secure and affordable way to move backups offsite to our repository. It enables additional availability and security services for us as well as additional peace of mind for our customers. Thanks to Veeam, it’s a win for both of us.”

Establishing a virtual desktop infrastructure can help agencies address the multiple challenges introduced not only by increased mobility but also by the rising demand for multilevel security needed to support both in-house and mobile workers," said Shawn McCarthy, Research Director, IDC Government Insights.

Dead and buried: Microsoft's holy war on open-source software

Q&A: Years ago, Microsoft's CEO described open source as a cancer. Times have changed. Just ask 22-year Redmond veteran and open-source proponent Mark Hill.

Time was when Microsoft executives thought nothing about publicly dissing open-source software as distinctly un-American.

Everyone has their pet theories. Some even drew a direct line back to the company's early days dating to 1976, when co-founder Bill Gates published an open letter chiding hobbyists for using Microsoft's Altair Basic program without paying for the product. By the time open source began gaining notoriety in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Microsoft saw a threat to the way it sold software and services and went on the PR offensive -- with no small amount of hyperbole.

''Open source is an intellectual-property destroyer,'' former Windows chief Jim Allchin famously quipped in 2001. ''I can't imagine something that could be worse than this for the software business and the intellectual-property business.''

"Linux is a cancer that attaches itself in an intellectual property sense to everything it touches," former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told the Chicago Sun Times a few months later. "That's the way that the license works."

But Microsoft's feud with open source has been sputtering for quite some time, and the senior managers who led the anti-open source charge are gone from the scene -- or at least no longer in positions of authority. Open source is now routinely used by corporations around the world, and the company's sniffy put-downs only fed into the perception of Microsoft as out of touch.

Some of that new thinking reflects the change at the top of the corporate pyramid, with Satya Nadella replacing Ballmer as CEO in early February. Since taking over, Nadella has talked up his vision of a Microsoft whose future isn't shackled to its Windows past.

"There has been a real change," said Forrester analyst Jeffrey Hammond, noting that while that shift hasn't yet permeated the entire Microsoft organization -- particularly the Windows team, "it's seeped into enough of the organization that it's more than just window dressing. There are many example where Microsoft is integrating with, and even creating open source in an effort to grow market share and support customers.

"The reason is simple," he continued. "The real world isn't black and white -- and there are open-source companies that sell proprietary software (e.g., Red Hat) and proprietary companies that use OSS to augment their commercial software and make it more attractive. As developer adoption of open-source software has grown to the 70 percent-plus level, I think most business units at Microsoft realized that treating it like 'a cancer' was self-defeating -- they lost that battle a long time ago."

Given the new tech realities, Microsoft will just have to pick and choose. Sometimes, it will be better off investing in collaborative, open-source projects like Hadoop or Git that win widespread adoption. Other times, Microsoft will be better off competing head-on as it does with Office vs. Open Office.

Last month, the company finally made official its unofficial decision to incorporate some open-source code into its developer and programming languages. More recently, Microsoft put 22-year company veteran Mark Hill in charge of a global group to cultivate open-source developers to write applications that work with Azure, the Microsoft cloud service that competes against the likes of Rackspace, Google, and Amazon.

I recently spoke with Hill. The following is an edited transcript of our conversation.

Cooper: There was a time when open source was considered an "intellectual-property destroyer," as Jim Allchin once referred to it. What are the new marching orders, and why the change?
Hill: We have a group of individuals who are residents around the world who are open-source practitioners that we've recruited from the community. They are our subject matter experts, and they've been helping us engage -- and help Microsoft become more aware of that community...But given their healthy knowledge of open source and their connections, we're changing roles to try and make Microsoft more responsive and to make sure that we appeal to that community at large.

With the aim being -- what?
Hill: We want make sure that we give (developers) the tools, training, and advice they'd need to run open-source tools on Azure. It's a great platform for them to build their business, and we want to give them everything they need to be successful.

When was the new direction formalized?
Hill: It's been ongoing for a long time. The fact that Azure supports a bunch of open-source apps and frameworks and languages -- that's not new news. It's maybe just a natural evolution...where we want to go out and activate the ecosystem to start using Azure. There's a big (potential) business out there.

And the goal is to win over open-source developers to port their apps on Azure? How do you go about that? What can Microsoft offer?
Hill: All the basics that you would in any IT business. Let's look at the competing value propositions.

What are the details?
Do we have the right advice, support, and learning? Do we have some free sample code that they can get to and test before they invest? Can we introduce people who are interested to people who have done this before?

There was a CSI job posting in December where the advertisement was "Win share against Open Source Software (OSS) in the cloud, on devices, and in traditional workloads by changing perceptions of Microsoft and winning the socket." So what are the rules of engagement? That is, where does it make sense for Microsoft to compete with open-source products, and where does it make sense to partner? It sounds as if you'll still compete in certain areas but that this isn't viewed any longer as something of a holy war where open source is seen as something evil. Or am I simplifying?
Hill: I don't think that you're oversimplyfing. You're completely correct in terms of there being a mindset change. We'll compete against certain products that are open-source products. But it's not about open source [per se]. For example, we'll compete against Linux when we feel that Windows Server is a better product for the customer or partner. In other cases, we'll certainly want to partner; it's just good business.

Steve Ballmer's no longer the CEO. What's Sayta Nadella's role in pushing for the mindset change?
Hill: I would just say that as a company, Microsoft is very forward-looking and we understand that in a devices and services world, the game needs to change. Many years ago, we began building in very good support for Linux and open source in Azure and this is just a continuation of that. Again, we need to appeal to a very broad market.

Connecting Microsoft’s mobile and cloud solutions to the universe of data in SAP software

For more than 20 years, Microsoft and SAP have worked together to help customers who run their business on SAP’s mission critical software do so with Microsoft’s industry leading platforms and productivity solutions. Today, I’m excited to announce an extension of our partnership that’s focused on giving enterprise customers increased flexibility and better insights – in the cloud and on mobile devices.

Windows Server is a great platform for SAP business applications, and now we’re taking that to the cloud. By the end of June, SAP will certify a number of their business applications to run on Microsoft Azure, including SAP Business Suite software, SAP Business All-In-One solution, SAP Mobile Platform, SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (SAP ASE) and the developer edition of the SAP HANA® platform. This means customers will be able to get the mission-critical benefits of SAP software – used by 86 percent of the global Fortune 500 – on our enterprise-grade public cloud. They will be able to move existing applications and services, or deploy new ones in minutes using the SAP Cloud Appliance Library tool, to Azure and benefit from nearly unlimited computing capacity.

Customers are already using Power BI and the interoperability built into the SAP Gateway for Microsoft to access SAP applications and data through Microsoft Office. We’re taking that to the next level with the general availability of Power BI connectivity to SAP BusinessObjects and an improved SAP Gateway for Microsoft. With Power BI connectivity, customers get best-in-class tools to visualize and find insights in the data that drives their business. And, the new Gateway for Microsoft, which is expected to be available by the end of 2014, will allow customers to access SAP data and processes through Office 365 and Microsoft Azure. Developers can also use this new Gateway to build applications quickly and easily by leveraging key Office 365 and Azure services like document collaboration, workflow, enterprise social and identity.

We know people want to be productive on the devices they love, wherever they are, which is why many of our customers’ favorite SAP applications already run on Windows and Windows Phone. Today, that gets even better. New, industry-specific apps for retail and banking, as well as updated versions of the SAP Mobile Platform with SDK’s for Windows and Windows Phone 8.1 are on their way. Previews will be out before the end of 2014 with general availability anticipated in 2015. Of course, customers will be able to manage and better secure all of these applications with Windows Intune and SAP Mobile Secure, giving enterprises the flexibility and control they need.

Microsoft is committed to helping customers thrive in this mobile-first, cloud-first world, with industry-leading platforms that support the applications and services they use to run their business. Our partnership with SAP is another exciting step on that journey, and we look forward to connecting the universe of SAP data to Microsoft’s mobile and cloud solutions so our customers can do more.

‘Who Has Your Back?’ – Electronic Frontier Foundation gives Microsoft 6/6 Stars on privacy approach to government data access

Posted by Jeff Meisner
Editor, Microsoft on the Issues

On Thursday, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) released its fourth annual report rating technology companies on their efforts to protect customer data from the government. “Who Has Your Back?” reflects the EFF’s thorough review of the practices and policies of each company against specific criteria.

This year, Microsoft met every one of six factors that companies were rated against, including the stringency of the legal demands companies require before providing data, their efforts to notify customers about government demands, transparency in reporting the volume and type of demands received and company efforts to fight for customers’ privacy rights in court and in Congress.

EFF’s award of six out of six stars to Microsoft is a reflection of the guiding principles, practices and policies that Microsoft employs on behalf of all customers. We encourage you to review the report for additional details and trends impacting data privacy.

More information about Microsoft’s approach to customer data access requests by government can be found at our Law Enforcement Requests Report site.

5 ways to help protect your Microsoft account

1. Create a strong password. Strong passwords use a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numerals, punctuation marks, and symbols. The longer the better, and don’t use personal information (such as a pet’s name, nickname, or driver’s license number) that can be easily guessed.

2. Protect your password. Don’t use the same password you use on other sites, and remember to change your Microsoft account password (as well as other passwords) regularly. Watch out for email social engineering scams designed to trick you into turning over your password to a cybercriminal.

3. Enable two-step verification. Two-step verification uses two ways to verify your identity whenever you sign in to your Microsoft account. Two-step verification is optional, but we recommend that you use it. Learn how to turn it on.

4. Make sure the security information associated with your account is current. If the alternate email address or phone number you’ve given us changes, update the settings of your account so that we can contact you if there’s a problem.

5. Watch out for phishing scams. If you receive an email message about the security of your Microsoft account, it could be a phishing scam. Don’t click links in any messages unless you trust or check with the sender.
